10 CELPIP Speaking Tips That Actually Work
Practical strategies for each of the 8 Speaking tasks, from someone who's analyzed thousands of AI-scored responses.
Tip 1: Don't Memorize Scripts
Examiners are trained to detect memorized responses. Instead, learn a FRAMEWORK for each task type (see our Answer Templates) and practice filling in different content each time. This sounds more natural and scores higher on 'coherence' and 'listenability.'
Tip 2: Use the Preparation Time
Every second of prep time matters. Don't start speaking in your head — instead, jot down 3 key points you want to cover. This prevents the common mistake of rambling without direction.
Tip 3: Speak at a Natural Pace
Speaking too fast = unclear pronunciation. Speaking too slow = you won't finish in time. Aim for a natural conversational pace. Record yourself and listen back — you'll immediately hear if you're rushing or dragging.
Tip 4: Use Transition Words
Connect your ideas: 'First of all,' 'Furthermore,' 'On the other hand,' 'In conclusion.' These signal to the examiner that your response is organized, which directly boosts your 'coherence' score.
Tip 5: Give Specific Examples
Don't say 'exercise is good for health.' Say 'I started jogging three times a week last year, and my energy levels improved significantly.' Specific details make your response sound authentic and push your score from CLB 7 to CLB 9.
Tip 6: Practice with Voice Recording
You can't improve what you can't hear. Record every practice session, listen back, and identify your weak points. Our Speaking practice includes voice recording with Groq Whisper transcription and instant AI scoring.
Tip 7: Master Task 1 (Giving Advice)
Task 1 is your warm-up — make it count. Always: (1) acknowledge the person's situation, (2) give 2 clear pieces of advice with reasons, (3) close with encouragement. This simple structure consistently scores CLB 9+.
Tip 8: Handle Difficult Situation Tasks Diplomatically
Task 6 (Difficult Situation) tests your ability to be professional. Never be aggressive. Always: acknowledge the other person's feelings, explain the situation calmly, propose a solution, and offer to follow up.
Tip 9: Use Varied Vocabulary
Don't repeat the same words. Instead of saying 'good' five times, use: beneficial, advantageous, valuable, effective, rewarding. Our Vocabulary Upgrader can help you find CLB 10+ alternatives for common words.
Tip 10: Finish Strong
Don't let your response trail off. End with a clear conclusion: 'For these reasons, I strongly believe...' or 'I'm confident that if you follow this advice, you'll see great results.' A strong ending leaves a lasting impression.
